The Diamond Sutra

Evaṁ mayā śrutam ekasmin samaye.

Bhagavān Śrāvastyāṁ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasyārāme.

Atha khalu Bhagavān purāṇakālaṁ bhikṣūnām āmantrayate sma—

“Bhikṣavo! Sarvadharmā anātmā. Yāvad anātmā, tāvad anityaḥ.

English version

Thus have I heard.

The Buddha was once dwelling in the Anathapindika’s monastery, in the Jeta Grove.

One morning, after putting on his robe, he took his alms bowl and entered the city of Shravasti to beg for food…

The Buddha said:

“All conditioned phenomena are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow,

like dew and lightning.

Thus should we contemplate them.
